Before you start, if you have not already done so, we recommend you take a look at the demonstration scrapbook!.
To register for Vizimarks click here.
You will then be presented with a short form to apply to become a Vizimarks customer. Click on the information symbols
next to each field for an explanation.
Once your application has been accepted you can access your very own Vizimarks scrapbook and install the small program required to add new cuttings and links to your scrapbook.
Please Note : You will need to respond to an email that is automatically sent to the email address you provided on the registration form, in order to fully activate your account. Until you respond to this email and confirm your password, some functionality may be restricted; and if you do not respond within 7 days your account may be suspended.
So that you can add new cuttings and links to your scrapbook you need to install a small program. The program adds new options to your context menu so that you can add to your scrapbook with just a right click of your mouse.
Once your registration has been accepted you will have the opportunity to install Vizimarks - it will only take a few seconds even on a slow connection.
You will then be ready to start adding online bookmarks, web-cuttings and visual bookmarks to your Vizimarks scrapbook!
Remember you will need to close your all your browser windows after you run the program to activate Vizimarks.
After you have registered click on 'Go to myVizimarks' on the Vizimarks Welcome Page. After a few seconds your scrapbook will be displayed.
Your scrapbook has been pre-populated with a few cards that explain, step by step, how you can use Vizimarks. You may want to refer to these cards as you learn how to use Vizimarks. You can delete these cards whenever you want.
3.1 Mini-tutorial
This section introduces some of the basic functionality of your scrapbook. You should follow the steps in sequence.
- You will then see your default leaf - with its name ('title') shown on a tab in the same colour as the leaf background. This is the first 'page' or 'leaf' of your scrapbook!
- At the top you can see the Vizimarks logo,
- To the left of the logo are some useful buttons (more about these later),
- And to the right is a wastebin.
- Click on one or two of the leaf tabs (called 'Leaf 2', 'Leaf 3', etc). You will see the highlight change, along with the background colour as you are looking at other 'pages' or 'leaves' of your scrapbook.
- Next we will customise a leaf. Left-click on the 'Leaf 4' tab and then 'right-click' on it. A dialog/pop-up window will appear with the title 'Adjust Leaf Settings'. This and most Vizimarks dialogs can be moved by dragging the blue titlebar. We will now change the colour from the current 'Lavender'. Click on the word 'Lavender' and scroll up or down to find a more acceptable colour (we have found that lighter colours work best!). Click on the colour you want.
- We will now customise the leaf a little more (assuming you are not ahead of yourself and have not clicked 'OK', the dialog will still be open!). Highlight the word 'Leaf 4' in the dialog box and type over it the word 'Entertainment'. Now click 'OK' and you will see the title in the leaf tab change.
- You can find out about the other options for leaf customisation in the User Guide - but for now we will press on.
You must install the Vizimarks software before you can add cuttings to your scrapbook. If you click here you will find an explanation of how to test if you have successfully installed Vizimarks.
Adding cuttings is as easy as:
- placing your mouse over an image or link (e.g. the logo at the top of this page)
- clicking the right mouse button (MacOs users should control-click the mouse)
- choosing "Add to myVizimarks" from the context menu If you do not see this choice in your context menu make sure you have Installed Correctly
- pressing "Add to Scrapbook" in the pop-up window!
4.1 Mini-tutorial
This section describes adding cuttings to your scrapbook in a little more detail. You should follow the steps in sequence.
- Place your mouse over the Vizimarks logo at the top of this page. Activate the context menu (in Windows and Linux this means 'right-click') over the logo and you will see that there are some new choices near the bottom of the context menu. Choose the 'Add to myVizimarks' option (if you do not see this option then make sure you closed down all your browser windows after the installation step in section 2 above).
- A new window should appear with the title 'Select the Element to be saved'. The Vizimarks logo should be nicely framed and you will also see two drop-down menus.
- Now place it in your 'Entertainment' leaf by choosing this from the options listed in the 'Target Leaf' drop-down menu (in the top right corner of the window). Finally click 'Add to scrapbook'.
- A confirmation message pops up briefly to show you what was added to your scapbook, but if you are reading this and not looking at your screen you may not have seen it!
- Lets add something else to the scrapbook before moving on. On this page activate the context menu over the 'Copyn Limited' link at the bottom of the screen, and choose 'Add to myVizimarks'. The contents of the selection window are slightly different this time. By default the choice of saving the 'link' is shown in the 'Your selection' drop-down menu. Let's say that we decide that we don't want this link after all, but rather a link back to the whole page. Scroll through the 'Your selection' drop-down menu, and at the bottom you will find 'Link to Page or Frame' - choose this and then click 'Add to scrapbook'.
- For more details about the selecting and adding cuttings to your scrapbook refer to the User Guide.
Your scrapbook has been pre-populated with cards that explain, step by step, how you can use Vizimarks. You may want to refer to these cards as you learn how to use Vizimarks. You can delete these cards at any time.
By now you will be getting a little more familiar with you scrapbook. This section introduces the manuipulation of cards in your scrapbook.
- On the Vizimarks Welcome Page click 'Go to myVizimarks' again.
- If you click on the 'Entertainment' leaf tab, you will see the Vizimarks logo nicely framed in a 'card' on the Entertainment leaf. If you click on the 'New Leaf' tab (or another tab if you saved it to a different target leaf), you will see a card containing the link called 'The Internet Scrapbook'.
- Cards can easily be moved by 'dragging and dropping' them. Try it with the Vizimarks logo. Place the mouse over any part of the grey border of the card (or over the small comments box at the bottom of the card), then hold down the left mouse button while moving it to somewhere else on the leaf, and then release the mouse button. The border of the card will briefly flash 'salmon pink' to confirm that your scrapbook has been updated.
- We will now move the card to another leaf by dragging it (as before), but this time releasing the mouse button when the mouse pointer is over another leaf tab (say 'Leaf 2'). The card will disappear, and then if you click on the 'Leaf 2' tab you will see it is now there.
- Now click on the 'New Leaf' tab to take another look at the card containing 'The Internet Scrapbook' link. This is called a 'text based link' ("TBL") to distinguish it from graphic links such as the Vizimarks logo card. A TBL can be manipulated in the same way as any other Vizimarks card, but looks and behaves like any regular favorites or bookmarks you may have uploaded - see the next section for details on this.
- Click on 'The Internet Scrapbook' link, and a new window will open showing the Vizimarks Welcome Page. Now close this window and return to your main browser window. TIP: It is best to have only one copy of your scrapbook open at any one time!
With Vizimarks you can upload you existing favorites or bookmarks to access from where ever you are browsing. Uploading a copy of your favorites/bookmarks is easy and you won't lose your original favorites or bookmarks.
- Return to the Vizimarks Welcome Page in your main browser window.
- If you are using MS Internet Explorer, click the 'Upload Favorites' item in the menu on the left, and then follow the instructions in the panel on the right. In the pop-up window, click 'yes' to confirm you want to export your favorites, and then after a few seconds (or longer if you have a lot of favorites!) you will get a message saying 'Successfully exported favorites'. Some users may not get this message, but their favorites may still have been uploaded - check this by following the next few steps (if at the end of this section it is clear that your favorites have not been uploaded then please contact help@vizimarks.com for assistance).
- If you are using Netscape 6 this process is a little more involved (we are awaiting an enhancement in Netscape itself to allow us to make the process easier!). Click the 'Upload Bookmarks' item in the menu on the left, and then follow the instructions in the panel on the right. Press the 'Browse' button next to 'Upload your Netscape Bookmark File:' (do not enter anything in the text box!!) and a dialog should appear to navigate you to the directory where your 'bookmarks.html' file is stored. Select it and click 'OK'. If you do not know where your bookmarks.html file is stored then follow the next step.
- If you are using Netscape 6 and you cannot find your bookmarks file, then you can export a copy to a specific file location. On your browser choose 'Bookmarks' and then 'Manage Bookmarks'. In the new window choose 'File' and then 'Export Bookmarks'. Make a careful note of where you save the 'bookmarks.html' file and then repeat the instructions in the previous bullet point, with this exported copy of your bookmarks.
- Whichever browser you are using, return to the Vizimarks Welcome Page and click on 'Go to myVizimarks'. Click on the tab of the leaf which you chose to upload your favorites/bookmarks to. Then click on the bookmarks/favorites button near the top left corner of the screen (or alternatively hold the 'shift' key down while you click again on the relevant leaf tab with the mouse). The contents of your leaf will shift to the right and, after a couple of seconds, all your favorites or bookmarks will appear neatly laid out on the left:
- You can open and close folders by clicking on them.
- You can rearrange them by dragging and dropping them.
- Try dragging one onto the leaf to the right of the list and see what happens!
- To close the list of TBLs (text based links), simply click on the bookmarks/favorites button (or 'shift-click' on the relevant leaf tab) again.
- For more details about uploading favorites/bookmarks refer to the User Guide.
